Read the summary of the initiative or the initiative text.

  • The goal of our initiative is to ensure that the people paid with Novato taxpayer money are citizens or legal immigrants with work visas.

  • Our initiative requires that contractors with Novato, whose contracts are more than $5,000/year, use E-Verify to check that their new employees are eligible to work in our country.   Subcontractors must also use E-Verify on their new employees.   Our initiative also applies to the new employees of the city.

  • If a contractor or subcontractor with the city who is required to use E-Verify does not use E-Verify or ignores E-Verify's results then the contractor must pay contract penalties.

  • CLEC is not asking for every business in Novato to use E-Verify.   We are asking that contractors with Novato use E-Verify to check that any new employee is eligible to work in the USA.   New employees of the city would be checked too.

  • We based our initiative on ordinances in Mission Viejo, CA and Lakewood, WA. The Mission Viejo ordinance has been in effect for over 2 years.

  • We have two lawyers in our group and we collaborated with the Immigration Reform Law Institute in the composition of the initiative.

On July 8, 2009, the Senate permanently authorized E-Verify and required all federal contractors to use E-Verify.   Novato should do the same for its contractors and pass our citizens' initiative!
